The Perfume Box: The Art of Discovering Your Olfactory Signature at Home

Opened perfume discovery box showing 5 samples and blotters, illustrating how to test and choose your olfactory signature at home.

Perfume boxes will often allow you to discover rare perfumes, perfumes that are not too well known to the general public, in short, pearls among confidential or niche perfumes. (cf. Confidential perfumery)

Buying a Perfume is a Less Superficial Act Than One Thinks

Beyond the acquisition of a perfume box, buying a new perfume is not an act to be taken lightly; it should not be considered like buying a garment or an accessory.

It engages the person more deeply. It is not at all superficial; it must reflect who you are, it must give you great emotion and touch your soul. You will transmit around you who you are deeply; it will be your olfactory signature or your olfactory message.

There are people faithful to their fragrance and others who will possess several fragrances; these different perfumes will correspond to different facets of their personality or even correspond to different times:

  • Day or evening perfume
  • Different perfume according to the seasons (cf. Choosing a perfume by season)
  • Different perfume according to activity; office or sport
  • Perfume for well-being or to seduce

So, put all the chances on your side, take time to find it, tame it, and finally choose it. In this case, the perfume box may help you find a favorite or better, your signature perfume.

Tips to Fully Enjoy Perfume Boxes

Perfume boxes for men or women will allow you to try perfume by perfume on your skin. The ideal is to try one a day, or one every two days. Note, we are not talking here about boxes that combine shower gel and cosmetic products of the same fragrance but indeed boxes that offer several Eaux de Parfum.

Avoid trying several at the same time; it is said that you can only love a perfume if you have slept with it.

If the next day you were not bothered, if you still have pleasant traces of your fragrance, on your skin or better if you have compliments from the people who live with you, it is a very good sign; you may have discovered a perfume that really suits you.

Olfactory Heritage and Signature Perfume

What is Olfactory Heritage?

Olfactory heritage is formed from the youngest age, most powerful before the age of 7, and represents the set of all scents, smells, and flavors perceived in your life that are linked to pleasant memories.

It might, for example, remind you of your affection for a grandfather who cherished you and took you to his garden to mow the lawn, or to pick vegetables. In this case, it is likely that green notes are your favorite olfactory register.

How Does Olfactory Heritage Develop?

This olfactory memory continues to develop after the age of 7. Everything will then depend on the life you lead, your environment, your region of origin, and your natural setting. It will not be the same if you live near the sea, on an island, or in the countryside.

It can also be influenced by the travels you have made, and the cuisines you have tasted. The quality of your sense of smell will also influence the quality of your memories. This olfactory identity is forged and enriched gradually, over the course of your life.

What is the Ideal Perfume?

The ideal perfume will be the one that corresponds deeply to what you have built from your experiences, from your childhood until today. This fragrance will allow you to leave a sillage that resembles you in the memory of others.

Perfume Box and “Parenthesis” Perfume

The “parenthesis” perfume is the one you can wear for a weekend, to play sports, or in hot weather. It will give you pleasure but it is generally lighter than the signature perfume; it is less complex and less faceted.

It will be for you like a breath of fresh air; it will allow you to find your signature perfume again with even greater pleasure if that is your search.

Discovery of a Perfume Thanks to a Perfume Box

It takes time to discover a perfume; between the test on a blotter or strip and the effect it will give on your skin, there can be surprises.

You must be wary of the first impression; for example, if you spray on the strip and you are not thrilled, perhaps the top note (cf. Top notes) will bother you. You might judge the latter hard, aggressive, or even unpleasant.

But these top notes by essence are volatile and will disappear to reveal the heart notes (cf. Heart notes) then subsequently the base notes (cf. Base notes) of the perfume which constitute more of the message of the perfume. These can give you good surprises and blend harmoniously on your skin.

The Importance of Evolution

It is said that a perfectly orchestrated perfume must have top notes that announce the base notes, or that from the flight of the perfume one must smell its future.

I have smelled vintage or very old perfumes that had top notes that were too hard because they were orchestrated by a perfumer who at the time cared more about the main message of the perfume than the top notes, and yet these perfumes had revealed sublime heart and base notes.

Conversely, often in new creations, some perfumers take more care of the top notes which can be smiling and attractive but the evolution is not up to par; it can prove hollow or without relief.

Conclusion

These boxes or discovery sets allow you to test perfumes and live with them. If you feel good with your perfume and if, in addition, you receive compliments, it’s a win.
