“The self-evidence of perfume carries an irresistible conviction; it enters us just as the air we breathe enters our lungs.”
Sylvaine Delacourte is a leading figure in French haute perfumery. Renowned for her twenty years at the prestigious Maison Guerlain, she left her mark on the industry by developing iconic fragrances and creating the concept of bespoke olfactory consultation.
Today, she puts her “Nez”, her critical eye and her passion at the service of the Perfume Guide, to decode, analyse and recommend the very best of the world’s olfactory creations.
From passion to olfactory revelation
Nothing destined this girl from the North of France to become one of the most influential “Nez” in Paris. Although she was steeped very early in the scents of her childhood (the perfume of peonies, of violet, of hot waffles and of the sand of the Côte d’Azur), it was through cosmetics that she entered the world of beauty.
After a brilliant start at Lancaster and directing a beauty school, boredom drove her to seek excellence. Fascinated by the sillage of L’Heure Bleue, she applied to Guerlain. It was during specialised training at Cinquième Sens, then at ISIPCA, that the true revelation took place: Monique Schlienger detected in her a rare olfactory gift. From then on, Sylvaine became insatiable for scents.
The Guerlain era: privy to the secrets of the gods
Noticed for her exceptional olfactory abilities and her sharp knowledge of the market, she was spotted by Jean-Paul Guerlain himself. She became his evaluator, his olfactory “sparring partner”, working in symbiosis in the Master’s private laboratory.
The real turning point in her career came at the end of the 1990s. Placed in fierce competition to create the house’s new great feminine perfume, she secretly developed a solar and daring olfactory direction with the perfumer Maurice Roucel. During the blind tests, her creation crushed the competition: the perfume L’Instant de Guerlain was born.
Following this triumph, she was appointed Director of Creation for Parfums Guerlain, a position she would hold for more than fifteen years. Free in her choices, she brought a breath of modernity while respecting the famous “Guerlinade”.
A portfolio of iconic creations
Over the course of her career as Director of Creation, Sylvaine Delacourte collaborated with the greatest perfumers in the world (Francis Kurkdjian, Olivier Polge, Thierry Wasser, Christine Nagel…) to design more than 70 fragrances. A scientific and unconventional expertise
Sylvaine Delacourte’s expertise extends well beyond the realm of commercial launches:
Bespoke perfumery and olfactory coaching. A pioneer in the industry, she designed for Guerlain an exclusive VIP bespoke perfume creation service. Trained in Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and waking hypnosis, she developed a unique method of psychological investigation to explore her clients’ olfactory memory and recreate the “scent of their life”.
Forensic olfaction. Her “Nez” is a precision instrument called upon by science. Alongside the famous forensic pathologist Philippe Charlier, she took part in astonishing historic olfactory analyses, ranging from the study of the mummified head of King Henri IV, to the ashes of Agnès Sorel, all the way to the embalmed hearts of Louis XIII and Louis XIV.
Transmission and independence
Driven by the desire to move forward, she left Guerlain to found her own independent perfume brand, structured around her favourite materials: Musks, Vanilla and Orange Blossom. Discover her journey and her full interview on the Delacourte Paris house website.
Strengthened by her regained independence, she now delivers in The Perfume Guide her uncompromising analysis of the market’s creations. Far from smooth marketing talk, she champions a perfumery of character, harmonious and endowed with a genuine artistic point of view.
